Information about applying for assistance

If you are outside Kaikoura and your household was affected by the recent earthquakes, you may still be eligible for support.

Wellington region

At this point we are working closely with local authorities to determine if there is a need in Wellington.

Specific requirements

We can help if you have specific requirements, for example if you live on a farm. When you apply for assistance, a temporary accommodation staff member will assess your specific needs and work with you to find a suitable temporary housing solution.

Costs of temporary accommodation

Generally there is a cost for all temporary accommodation options.

A person should first check with their insurance provider to see if their policy will cover rent. If not, they can contact the Ministry of Social Development to see if they qualify for financial assistance.

Types of temporary accommodation being provided

Temporary accommodation staff members are assessing the specific needs of people who have been displaced by the earthquakes, and working to find suitable housing options. At this stage, temporary accommodation is a mix of undamaged residential housing stock; tourist accommodation; and bespoke solutions for people with unique needs, including making Rawhiti Domain temporary accommodation units available to rural property owners.
